Early VW/Audi vehicles that were made up to around 1995/96 have the early OBD1 2x2 diagnostic connector in them. In order to scan the car you need this adapter cable. This lead is a 16 pin female to 2+2 male connectors

The diagnostic tool used must be designed to connect to OBD1 systems in order to use an adapter cable with it
